Sustainability
Overview
Overview
What is sustainability? Is it recycling an aluminum can? Planting a tree? Driving an electric vehicle?
Merriam Webster defines sustainable as ”capable of being sustained.”
Definition two is “of, relating to, or being a method of harvesting or using a resource so that the resource is not depleted or permanently damaged. OR of or relating to a lifestyle involving the use of sustainable methods.”
In the contract furniture industry, there are a number of ways that sustainability and sustainable practices can make a huge and meaningful difference. So much so that many organizations consider it a key factor in their decision making strategy. Research shows that 90% of executives believe sustainability is important and organizations like BIFMA, WELL and SCS Global have set up standards and internal programs to recognize and legitimize it.
By specifying manufactures who use sustainable practices and materials to make sustainable products, organizations can have a real, positive impact on the wellbeing of their people and our planet. When these products are placed in a well building that incorporates sustainability into everything from air, light, sound, movement and more, the impact can be significant.
And when a company is ready to move or refresh, the decisions they make regarding disposal can also matter. Decommissioning decisions where reuse, donation and recycling are considered help to help thousands of tons of office furniture out of landfills each year.
