AI’s Changing View of the Modern Workplace
On December 29, 2023, we used Bing’s AI image generator (powered by DALL-E 3) to prompt Artificial Intelligence (AI) to convey how it interprets the modern workplace. One year later, on December 31, 2024, we ran the test again to compare the changing perception this technology has on how and where we work. The results from both years are below.
General Observations: Like last year, observe the depiction of people in relation to space/place. Note the surroundings, art style, framing and perspective. Overall, the results from 2024 seem to portray a more positive, collaborative and people-focused workplace. What do you notice?
Prompt: Office With A Strong Workplace Culture
December 2024 Results
December 2023 Results
What we Noticed:
Workspaces were more densely populated with people and resemble classrooms. Colorful, maybe even multicultural artwork adorns the walls. Still lots of plant life (biophilia). Not an overwhelming amount of technology.
Prompt: Office With A Toxic Workplace Culture
December 2024 Results
December 2023 Results
What we Noticed:
Interestingly, when last year’s prompt (‘Office With a Weak Workplace Culture’) was used, the results were very similar to the images of the ‘strong workplace culture’. When the prompt swapped out the word ‘weak’ with ‘toxic’ the results more closely resembled last year. Both depicted cartoonish spaces and stressed-looking people. This year, however, the villain leader seems to be missing and posters with motivational statements cover the walls. Like last year, the spaces are cluttered with piles of paper and old looking office furniture.
Prompt: Innovative Workplace
December 2024 Results
December 2023 Results
What we Noticed:
Both years featured nature and biophilic design and plenty of natural light. Unlike last year however, this year had more people and collaboration. Images from 2023 showed mostly focused work almost exclusively done on computers. One year later we see lots of paper charts, people working in groups and conversations. We also noted a lack of soft seating, which was prominently featured last year.
Prompt: Hybrid Workplace
December 2024 Results
December 2023 Results
What we Noticed:
Drastic difference from last year regarding people with 2024 depicting densely populated spaces compared to largely vacant ones from 2023. Both years featured lot of computers and fairly open workspaces. One image from 2024 was also illustrated.
Prompt: Remote Working
December 2024 Results
December 2023 Results
What we Noticed:
Significant difference in artistic style. All images from 2024 very similar, with 3-6 people on video call working in what appear to be home offices. 2023 appears to show people working in vacation like settings where 2024 is more formal, even if at home.
Prompt: A Great Place To Work
December 2024 Results
December 2023 Results
What we Noticed:
These 2024 images are very similar to the 2024 ‘strong culture’ images results, with lots of people in a collaborative space, plenty of plans and lots of light (note less artwork on the walls for these). Compared to 2023, the images are much different…with last year’s results not consistent (robots, monkeys, cartoons, etc).
Prompt: Modern Workplace In Orlando
December 2024 Results
December 2023 Results
What we Noticed:
Last year featured grand outdoor (external) views. 2024 results feature lots of people, which is a common theme. One notable difference between Orlando results and the others are the use of round tables.
In conclusion, it is clear that AI continues to evolve and adapt its image of how and where humans work. We will continue to track this perspective as the technology develops. We believe that using technology to inspire your next space is a wise move, however having a trusted partner to guide you down the right path to your next space is the most important key to success. You’ll find that with BOS.
