5 Tips for Productivity in the Workplace

For just about everyone in the workplace, staying productive is an essential component. Here are some tips for finding — and maintaining — your utmost productivity in the office.

Set Goals

Setting goals, big or small, help productivity. Having a list of goals in front of you give you a sense of direction. It means you can check it off the list at the end of the day. If your goals seem overwhelming, start small. Imagine your goals as a grocery list. Writing them down gives the sense of achievement and accomplishment. If the goals seem too big or broad, break them down. Figure out what you’re going to need to get to your goal.

Go back to your grocery list. How are you going to get to the grocery store? Car, walk, subway? These are the decisions we make everyday. Try not to let the idea of having a list, or a large goal, overwhelm you into thinking it’s one big leap. Don’t be afraid to make a mistake, or not make it all the way. Goals are just milestones in your journey.

6 tips for productivity

Environment

Be aware of your environment. A productive person needs a productive workspace. Narrow in on what’s working for you, and what’s not. It’s important to notice the positives and the negatives of your space. Many people only pay attention to the negatives, while the positives have a lot to teach you. Every part of your environment reflects on you personally, and your productivity. Be open with yourself and peers about what you feel needs to change in the environment. Don’t be afraid to make changes.

Take Care of Yourself

You’re not a machine. Don’t treat yourself like one. Work can be extremely busy and stressful, but productivity doesn’t go up when you’re stressed out and unhappy. You’re probably not in love with your job everyday, but making sure to put your self-care first, can turn bad days into productive ones. Don’t be afraid to make changes in your work and organization. You don’t have to do what works for someone else. Use your individualism to increase your productivity and support your workmates.

Architecture and Design

Remember how important architectural and design elements are while interacting in the workplace. If you’re having trouble working, don’t worry. Stress only makes things worse. There are so many options to try if you’re struggling. Maybe sitting near a window, on a couch is helpful. Try going into an acoustically perfect conference room. What about standing? Do you need a large whiteboard to stand write out your thoughts? Try grabbing a co-worker and go to a collaborative space. If your workspace hasn’t been designed for this purpose, look into making some large-scale changes for your space. Don’t be afraid of leading change. Don’t let fear control your productivity.

Be Your Own Boss

We can’t all have amazing bosses. In fact, most of the time we don’t. Working for someone you don’t get along with can create a lot more stress and anger in the workplace, which completely eliminates productivity. We’ve all been there. We waste time ranting to co-workers, taking extra coffee breaks, all to escape our boss.

In order to be productive, you’ve got to be your own boss. Even if you work well with your boss, admit they’re not always there when you need them. There are decisions that are going to be made without getting your boss’ approval. No matter your relationship with your boss or bosses, you can always work well with one boss: yourself. That’s the most important one.

If you can work for yourself, discipline, evaluate, and be productive, you’ve made it. A large part of productivity is about self-realization and confidence. No one is going to agree with you 100% of the time—and you can’t expect them to. Being a boss means that you’re a leader. Being a leader means you’re a self-starter. Be proactive with your work. Use your intentionality and experience. Don’t be afraid to offer suggestions to your bosses. If they reject you, don’t let it get you down or stop your productivity. If you work hard, your bosses will realize it. Suggestions and hard work do not go unnoticed in the workplace.
