Change Communication: Tips for a Safer Return to the Workplace
It is finally time for some workers to return to the workplace. While some people may be rejoicing to return to normal, others may fear what this new normal will look and feel like. When the COVID-19 pandemic first hit the nation, many workers had to make drastic adjustments to where they worked and how they worked. Workers also had to find a new way to balance their work obligations with family life. For many people, this change and uncertainty about the future brought on stress and feelings of insecurity.
One thing everyone seems to be certain about is that the workplace will never be the same. But no one can know exactly how the transition back to the workplace will go. And no one can determine what other changes will come in the future. During their return, many workers will be stressed and unsure of what to expect and what is expected of them during this unprecedented time. Here are some tips for a safer return to the workplace.

Prior to the Return
Before your workers return to the workplace, be sure to provide them with insight on how the office may look and feel different. Also, let your workers know what will be expected of them to uphold health and safety standards.
What is the workplace distancing protocol? Will seating arrangements change? What are the policies on eating and drinking? Will workers still be able to use the breakroom and fridges? Will workers still be expected to travel to and from sites and meetings?
When it comes to addressing change, no detail is too small. Workers who feel comfortable and confident to return to the workplace will be able to openly address issues, communicate their needs, and work productively.
After the Return
Even when the initial return has passed, workers will still be adjusting to the new normal of the workplace for months, maybe years, to come. It is important to keep workers up to date on any further changes and expectations. It is also just as important to continue to encourage workers to maintain health and hygiene standards, as well as monitor workers’ health. Encourage those experiencing any symptoms of coronavirus to stay home. Do not let the passing of time relax the rules of health and hygiene, which are keeping everyone safe in the workplace.
And don’t forget to applaud your workers for working with the company through this time of turbulence. Provide them with the flexibility they need to be successful. Because not only are these workers adjusting to new changes yet again in their workplace, but also in their homes.
Review and Ask for Feedback
Workers can provide insightful feedback on how their companies can help them stay safe and healthy while doing their jobs. While back on the job, workers may encounter health and hygiene obstacles not previously identified. Because most of the time, the people who know the best way to do their jobs safely are the people actually living them day-to-day.
Also, consider the benefits of allowing workers to work from home. If not permanently, a few days a month or week. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many of us learned that our jobs can be done from almost anywhere with a steady internet connection.
