The Impact of Creating a Workspace that Welcomes Diversity

The benefits of incorporating diversity into your workplace are obvious—and necessary. In this day and age, there is no excuse to not have a diverse workforce in place, especially for higher-up positions. This reflects to newcomers and entry-level applicants that your company is open to diversity and wants to prioritize having diverse perspectives in place to represent all angles for consumers and those within. For instance, women of color are statistically one of the most underpaid minority groups but seeing that there are women of color on advisory boards and in high-level positions within a company will show others that they have a fair shot in your organization.

Here are some of the many benefits of making diversity a focal point in your organization.

Various Perspectives

Perhaps pretty obviously, having a diverse workforce will allow you to have a variety of perspectives in your organization. Not only are you more inviting to potential employees, but you’ll be more enticing to your consumers as well since you can see from all their varied points of view.

Increased Productivity

You’ll likely see an increase in productivity if you address diversity and make your workplace more diverse. A focus and priority on diversity will inspire those already in your organziation and those who are considering joining. According to Wonolo, “According a McKinsey study, U.S. public companies with diverse executive boards have a 95% higher return on equity than do those with homogeneous boards.”

Foster Innovation

By bringing in more diverse voices to your organization, you’ll be able to see a rise in innovation. You’ll hear more voices and will get a range of ideas and different solutions for how to tackle problems. It’ll then lead to more innovative products and services for your consumers. And on top of that, you’re also more likely to spread in a global capacity as well since you’ll be able to reach newer segments of your audience and talent pool.

Improves Company Culture

You’ll likely see an improvement to your company’s culture once you create a more diverse workforce as well, which is great because a survey by Glassdoor shows that 67 percent of people consider diversity important while looking for a job. In a trickle-down type way, you’ll be able to see more happiness spread throughout your organization if you implement diversity as a priority from the top down.

Less Turnover

If people are happier working in your organization and feel that their views are being represented and prioritized, then you’ll have less turnover year over year. And when you do have a job vacancy, you’re making your open positions available to a larger group of potential candidates by making sure that you’re being as conscious as possible in your hiring efforts. Who knows—one open position could even leave you with some back-up candidates for the future or new freelancers!

Improve Your Company’s Image

Though this shouldn’t be a priority reason for focusing on diversity, it’s easy to see how it can be a great side effect. Your company’s reputation will likely improve if you make your efforts of prioritizing diversity known. You can easily become the company that employees and clients seek out amongst your competitors.
