Sitting is the new smoking
We are all beginning to hear it, “sitting is the new smoking”. What is worse is when you hear it; you just may be sitting down, and have been sitting down for the past couple of hours working. If you haven’t heard it yet, hear is why it is being stated:
Sitting is linked to increased risk of cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. Even if you are someone who exercises on a regular basis, you are at risk!
What are the facts? Why is sitting so bad for you? By sitting you are…
-
- Only burning 1 calorie per minute
- Thirty minutes to an hour of daily exercise is not enough to counteract the negative effects of prolonged sitting.
- Good cholesterol drops by 20% after just two hours of sitting down.
- Electrical activity in the leg muscles shut off the moment you sit down.
- Men and women who sit for more than 23 hours a week are 64% more likely to die from heart disease.
Why is sitting being related to smoking at all? How is sitting related to the choice of smoking!? That is it, sitting is a choice; just as smoking is. We choose when to sit, for how long to sit, and why we sit.
What can you do at your job to become a little more active and not an “active couch potato”?
-
- Stretches
- Go on walks for ten minutes every hour
- Meeting walks
- Exercises at your desk

Remember, keep exercising! Exercising is definitely beneficial to your health, but it alone cannot change the negative effects of sitting for over eight hours a day. Check out BOS Pinterest page for exercises that you can do at your desk!
